SURTEX

A while back in our Professional studies lessons we looked at Trade shows, what goes on and how to apply to sell your work at one. We were then asked to research different trade shows, and I chose to look further at Surtex, a trade show held in New York. A trade show is held in a large exhibition space and is mainly for designers and designer makers to sell their work, usually to companies who want to reproduce the print or design on a larger scale. Surtex is one of the biggest trade shows and is held every year, drawing in established designers and companies looking for the freshest designs to use on their products.

Surtex also hold a competition called Designnext which honours young art and design students and gives them the chance to have their work featured in the trade show for potential buyers to see.

Chanel A/W 2014

Chanel stole the show at London Fashion Week, and its not surprising. The catwalk was transformed into a  full scale Chanel supermarket, complete with shelves stacked with branded merchandise and impeccably dressed shoppers. Every detail was accounted for, with chain bags created specifically to look like shopping baskets, and models strolling around, browsing the shelves.

Tweed in a mixture of pastel shades, oversized coats and Chanel trainers were some of the main features in the collection, and chain bags, belts, and padlocked accessories really finished off the look. "Women don't go shopping in stilettos" - Karl Lagerfeld

Designing for fashion fabrics

Our Work bay inspiration! As part of our studio modules we were asked to display our chosen concept in our work spaces.
Sketch of a leopard using a koda trace pen on acetate.
A selection of florals chosen for my imagery. During the design process our imagery will be combined to then be embroidered onto a skirt and top template. To do this I will use many different techniques such as dyeing fabric, appliqué, hand embroidery and hand painting with dye! The designs will be aimed towards the higher end of the fashion fabrics market.

It has loads of good information for surface designers, with sections on  finding inspiration, photoshop techniques, putting together the perfect repeat pattern and lots more!  Really found this helpful!  £10 from Amazon :)

Durham Lumiere Festival / November 2013

Durham Lumiere is a festival that runs over four days in November and is made up of stunning light projections and installations spread around the city centre. The festival also ran in 2009 and 2011 and together attracted over 225,000 people and raised a profit of £5.8 million over the eight days in total. I visited on the Saturday (16th November) shown below is a small selection of the images I took on the night.

This light installation was my favourite as it was a phone box that had been transformed into a giant fish tank, complete with about one hundred goldfish.

Tartan womenswear A/W 13/14

I love wearing tartan at this time of year so thought I'd do a bit of research on the trend. The AW13 catwalks brought us many variations of the trend, ranging from the simple plaid structured blazer to the neon yellow skirt, introduced to us by Versace. Tartan can work effortlessly on almost anyone, and can update a simple pair of ripped jeans or, teamed with a leather skirt, can instantly create that punk, edgy, but still fun feel. WGSN has used a good range of imagery to show how tartan is being used on and off the catwalks for next year. We also see a surge of tartan and leopard print being thrown together in the same outfit, which creates an interesting clash of colour and texture
